Partial Listing of On-Site Resident Activities/Programs

Physical Amenities

  • Services coordinator's office
  • Large front porches & entry patios with benches
  • Children's activity areas & large multipurpose community rooms
  • Outdoor recreational areas, some with portable barbecues, benches, volleyball net, handball court, tetherball & basketball hoop
  • Brightly-lit laundry rooms adjacent to activity hubs
  • Computer learning centers
  • Children's classrooms/playrooms/meeting rooms
  • Library/study halls

Adult Education Classes, Seminars,
or Special Presentations

  • Welfare-to-Work Program (both classes & individualized assistance, depending upon interest & need)
  • Child development classes
  • Earthquake preparedness seminars
  • Series of presentations by community groups on topics such as welfare reform, CalWORKS & health education
  • Series of presentations by LAPD representatives, discussing protection against criminal activity on the streets & security
    for the buildings
  • Management company presentations on building security
    & maintenance

Activities for Children & Teenagers

  • Childcare when parents participate in on-site activities/classes/meetings
  • Computer learning center activities
  • Piano/music lessons (funded either by Beyond Shelter or
    Resident Management Committees)
  • Arts & crafts activities (volunteers)
  • Field trips (developed & implemented by Resident Management Committees, the services coordinator or outside organization)
  • Tae kwon do classes (taught by a resident for children of Casa Carondelet & Coronado Place)
  • Summer day camps & one- to two-week overnight camps

 

Activities Organized by Resident Management Committees

  • Periodic surveys of residents' needs & concerns
  • Monthly meetings of all residents to plan activities, identify priorities, discuss problems in the building or criminal and/or gang activity outside the building, communicate with management, etc.
  • Holiday parties & potluck dinners, usually held at Easter, Thanksgiving & Christmas
  • Summer barbecue/potluck both on-site & at local parks
  • Haunted house (at Coronado Place) & Halloween parties at all sites
  • Monthly "clean-up" days (cleaning up all community areas)
  • Field trips for residents (such as to the beach or camping)
  • Periodic parking lot sales & Sunday night movie videos to raise money for activities
