Awards & Recognition
Beyond Shelter's "Housing First" Program for Homeless Families is widely recognized as a model for ending and preventing family homelessness. Beyond Shelter's additional programs and initiatives have also been recognized locally and nationally. Awards include the following:

  • December 2010 - On behalf of Beyond Shelter's work in South Los Angeles, the MetLife Community Development Initiative Award was granted by the MetLife Foundation, naming Beyond Shelter as one of a small group of organizations nationwide providing economic development in America's highest-poverty communities.

  • November 2010 - In recognition of the "Housing First" Program, Beyond Shelter was named a 2010 Neighborhood Builder by the Bank of America Neighborhood Excellence Initiative. The two-year, $200,000 award brings prestige and capacity building to Beyond Shelter's emerging leaders.

  • 2009 - In recognition of her pioneering efforts to address family homelessness through a "Housing First" approach, Tanya Tull was elected an Ashoka Fellow.

  • May 1999 - Wanted: Solutions for America (PDF)
    "Solutions for America" is a national initiative of the Pew Partnership for Civic Change that aims to record and promote innovative programs that build stronger communities. Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

  • 1996 - The "Housing First" Program was one of "100 International Best Practices" chosen by the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (UNCHS) in Nairobi, Kenya, for dissemination worldwide.

  • June 1996 - The "Housing First" Program was one of "25 U.S. Best Practices" chosen by the U.S. Housing & Urban Development Department (HUD) to represent the U.S. at the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements, Habitat II, held in Istanbul, Turkey.

  • February 1996 - The Nonprofit Sector Achievement Award was presented by the National Alliance to End Homelessness in Washington, D.C.

  • September 1992 - The Community Service Excellence Award was presented by the Federal Interagency Council on the Homeless.
